New Matter over Thread Smoke Alarm Available for Preorder
New startup Sensereo, based in Hong Kong, have launched preorders for a brand new smoke alarm/sensor/detector. This new device is possibly the first of its kind to offer Matter over Thread, where previously these would typically use WiFi or Zigbee, like Aqara’s recently released version available in Europe (review HERE, video HERE).
The MS-1 is a photoelectric smoke detector, which uses an infrared LED and a photosensitive receiver placed at an angle in a dark chamber. Because it also uses Matter over Thread, the response times are said to be pretty fast, as well as being more energy efficient. Additionally, it should work with all Matter compatible ecosystems. However, on the company’s preorder page, it only states that it’s compatible with Apple Home (iOS 18.4) and Samsung SmartThings, so maybe it only supports Matter platforms that are up to date with the latest Matter specs.
It comes with dual power supplies, which appear to be lithium batteries, that are designed for a typical 10 year lifespan, which incidentally is the same length as the warranty.
Given that it’s offering Matter over Thread, you’d expect it to be expensive, but it’s currently available on the preorder for just US$44.99, although it doesn’t actually specify the shipping date. It also has certification from a few different organisations, including BSI, DBI, SGS, CE UKCA, and TUV Rheineland.
