Meross Releases Matter Compatible ‘3-in-1’ Smoke Sensor
Meross has today announced an update to it previous smoke detector (GS559A), with the just as catchily named MA151. The company are touting this to be more than just a smoke detector, however, with a combination other potentially useful additions.
This new device is also Matter compatible, although only via the company’s own Matter compatible MSH450 hub, which adds to the admittedly reasonably cheap price of US$29.99.
The Meross MA151 combines smoke detection, intrusion sensing, and tamper alerts in a single unit. It allows remote monitoring through the Meross app, with support for multiple users. Notifications are provided for alarms, low battery, tampering, and when hazards are cleared. The device stores up to 10 years of event records and can connect to third-party platforms via the aforementioned Meross hub.
The MSH450 hub and smoke detectors work together as part of a connected security system. When smoke is detected, the detector emits an 85dB alarm (audible at over 3 metres), and the hub follows with a 110dB alert, activating all connected alarms. Automations can be set to switch off high-power devices to help reduce the risk of further fire hazards. When combined with door or motion sensors, the smoke detector can also function as a siren during unauthorised entry. This option to use the siren in a smoke detector is something that many have asked for before, so it could be a winner for those hankering for that extra functionality.
The Meross smoke detector uses dual photoelectric sensors and an upgraded chipset to help distinguish smoke from steam more reliably. It complies with the EU’s minimum smoke density standard and responds within 0.02 seconds after repeated detection. A 0.8mm insect-proof mesh helps reduce false alarms. The device is also certified by SGS, DBI, and meets the EN14604 standard. This does appear to suggest, however, that it’s not going to be something you’d be able to use in US homes.
Powered is supplied by replaceable AA batteries, designed to last up to three years and easy to swap when needed. The housing is made from V0-rated fire-retardant, anti-yellowing, and UV-resistant materials, supporting a service life of up to 10 years.
