Avia Launches The First Smart Sash Window Fastener

Avia, the UK-based smart home security brand from Mighton Products, has announced the launch of the Avia Smart Sash Fastener in the USA. This is apparently the first smart sash fastener designed specifically for traditional vertical sliding windows. With Apple Home compatibility, tis fastener can provide real-time status updates to an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, via the Apple Home app, showing whether a window is open or closed.

Funnily enough, we did report on an older version of this product almost five years ago, way back in September of 2020, so whilst it has taken a long time to get to market (much like their recently released deadbolt lock), it has finally arrived.

Unlike basic window sensors, the Avia Smart Sash Fastener functions as a full locking mechanism. It can be retrofitted to existing sash windows by replacing the handle, combining physical security with smart monitoring. The smart sash fastener is available in five finishes to maximise the possibility of matching the other hardware for most window. In the United States, sash windows are commonly known as ‘hung windows’, making the product suitable for many homes.

The only potential downside from our perspective is that the smart sash fastener uses Bluetooth LE technology, so no Thread here unfortunately. It does come with an LED pairing and status indicator, and includes a CR2450 coin cell battery that promises a life of over one year under normal use.

Within Apple Home, if you lock the fastener, so the window is closed and locked, the app will show as ‘Closed’, and when unlocked or open, will show as ‘Open’.
