Aqara Releases its First EU Shutter Switch

Today, Aqara has released its first Shutter switch for the European market. The new Aqara Shutter Switch H2 EU is is an in-wall switch designed for straightforward control and automation of window coverings, and is compatible with 4-wire bi-directional AC motors for roller shutters and blinds. It supports both Thread and Zigbee connectivity, giving users the choice between native Matter compatibility or the wider feature set of Zigbee, with the option to switch protocols. The switch also includes two additional wireless buttons that can be used to trigger smart home scenes.

CONTROL AND AUTOMATION

With the Shutter Switch H2 EU, shutters and blinds can be controlled remotely using mobile apps or voice assistants (Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri), even when away from home. They can be included in smart home scenes and routines, such as a “good night” scene to close all shutters and arm the security system. Automation can also be based on schedules or conditions such as temperature, occupancy, or window status. For example, shutters can be lowered on winter nights to improve insulation, or closed in the daytime to prevent glare when a room is in use. The simple Up/Pause and Down/Pause buttons make manual operation accessible to all household members and visitors.

THREAD AND ZIGBEE SUPPORT

The dual-protocol design allows users to choose their preferred connectivity. With Thread, the switch connects directly to Matter platforms such as Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, and SmartThings without the need for an Aqara hub. With Zigbee, users gain access to Aqara’s full ecosystem features, including custom calibration and preset shutter positions.

EXTRA BUTTONS FOR HOME CONTROL

In addition to shutter control, two side buttons can be used for devices or scenes. Under Zigbee’s Custom Press Mode, these buttons support single press, double press, and long press, enabling up to six different automations or scenes.

CALIBRATION

Smart Calibration automatically maps the full movement range of the shutter without manual setup. In Zigbee mode, users can also set upper and lower limits to avoid obstacles such as flowerpots or ornaments on windowsills.

55 MM FRAME COMPATIBILITY

The switch fits the standard 55 mm modular system and works with third-party frames such as Gira System 55 and Merten M. Aqara also supplies its own Switch Frame H2 EU (2-gang and 3-gang), available separately, designed for use with the H2 EU series.

The Aqara Shutter Switch H2 EU is available now on Amazon’s regional stores, including Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, in addition to other third party stores and regions.

Not a fan of these wider Zigbee feature-set devices. I hope this is just a transitional state, while Aqara ports all of its features to Thread, and not just a nudge toward getting locked into a proprietary ecosystem.

    • I do think it’s their way of making their ecosystem more alluring, so I don’t think it’ll change, at least for a while.
