Meross Releases its First Thread Device – A Presence Sensor
In a first for Meross, the company has announced its very own presence sensor with Matter over Thread, the Smart Presence Sensor MS605. This is not the company’s first Matter device, but it is so far their only product to use Matter over Thread.
The new model picks up where their previous presence sensor left off, the MS600 (review HERE), which used Matter over WiFi. As it uses 2.4GHz WiFi, it requires a constant power supply, much like most presence sensors up until very recently.
The MS605 uses the latest Matter over Thread protocol with a Nordic chipset and a long-lasting battery for flexible installation. By combining millimetre-wave radar with infrared motion detection, it can identify subtle movements and human presence with accuracy. A real-time light sensor monitors ambient brightness and reports changes directly to the Matter platform.
A 90º foldable and 360º rotatable stand allows the sensor to be placed on ceilings, walls, or corners. It includes a 3-year CR123A lithium battery and has an IP67 rating, so it can operate from minus 20°C to plus 60°C. It can be used in bathrooms, basements, or attics, and detects motion up to 6m and presence within 4m, which is suitable for a range of rooms, including studies and bedrooms.
Triple detection technology combines radar, infrared, and light sensing to reduce false triggers from traditional single-sensor designs. Millimetre-wave radar detects subtle micro-movements such as chest movements while breathing. The infrared sensor helps filter non-heat motion such as curtains or robot vacuums, and the light sensor supports smart lighting control, although Alexa does not currently support this sensor.
The MS605 connects directly to Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant through Matter over Thread, with no separate hub or a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection required. Local control provides low-latency responses, so lights can turn on when you get up at night, and lighting and cooling can activate when you return home. Matter local control also keeps data processing within the home and continues to function without an internet connection.
The detection range can be divided into three zones in the Meross app, each with its own presence or absence conditions. These zones appear as separate sensors on third-party platforms for more advanced automation. For example, in a study, the main light might turn on at 5 metres, and a desk lamp at 2.4 metres. In a bathroom, a night light might activate at 6 metres, the main light at 4 metres, and the mirror light at 1.6 metres for one second.
You can preorder the MS605 Presence Sensor from Meross’ own webstore, with shipping listed as late December.
