Kwikset Launches a sub-$200 Matter/Thread Smart Lock
Kwikset, no stranger to regular or smart lock has announced the release of the Aura Reach, a new smart lock for under US$200 (currently on Amazon.com for US$189). The good news is the lock supports Matter over Thread, allowing it to integrate with all the major smart home platforms; Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home.
The Aura Reach also uses Bluetooth for initial setup and local management through the Kwikset app. This allows users to create and manage access codes, adjust lock settings, and share access with guests, without requiring cloud connectivity for basic functions.
The lock features a backlit touch keypad with LED illumination for use in low-light conditions. The keypad has a fingerprint-resistant matte surface and provides physical button feedback. A proximity-based wake function automatically lights the keypad as the user reaches for it, helping make code entry quicker and more reliable.
Hands-free unlocking is available via the Kwikset app using Bluetooth and geofencing. When enabled, the lock can unlock automatically as the user approaches the door, without manual interaction. This approach is generally less precise than Ultra Wideband, which is expected to appear more widely in smart locks during 2026, but Bluetooth-based proximity unlocking remains in use across several manufacturers. An optional signal range boost can also be enabled to increase wireless range, with the aim of improving stability and responsiveness when the lock is used on a Matter network.
Kwikset’s SmartKey Security system allows the lock to be rekeyed by the user without removing it from the door. The mechanism is designed to resist common physical attack methods while allowing the internal keying to be changed in seconds. Installation is intended to be straightforward and suitable for DIY fitting, as is typical for standard deadbolt locks.
The lock supports one-touch locking via the keypad, allowing the door to be secured with a single press when leaving. An auto-lock function can also be enabled, automatically locking the door after a user-defined delay. A built-in tamper alarm activates if interference is detected. When the user is nearby, alerts are delivered through the Kwikset app, and tamper events are recorded in the app’s activity log.
The Aura reach is available now, in two finishes – Matte Black and Satin Nickel, via Amazon.com for US$189.00.
