GE’s New Smart Shades Use Matter Over Thread
GE Lighting, now a part of Savant, returns to CES 2026 with a surprising new product line – GE Smart Shades – and yes, they utilise Matter over Thread.
The new GE Smart Shades are Matter-compatible motorised smart roller blinds designed specifically for simplified installation and day-to-day use. They feature a screw-free mounting system intended to reduce visible hardware and create a clean, minimal appearance. These shades are offered in white or grey fabrics, paired with aluminium trim, and are available in blackout or light-filtering variants.
Control is provided through Matter-enabled smart home platforms (e.g. Apple Home) or via a dedicated remote included with each shade. When integrated into Matter ecosystems, the shades can be automated through schedules and voice control to support comfort, privacy, and energy management.
Connectivity is provided over Matter and Thread, with support for Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Home Assistant isn’t mentioned, but is assumed to be compatible if not now, then soon.
Key characteristics include a compact, magnetic rechargeable battery rated for up to six months of use per charge, quiet motor operation, and multiple size options for windows up to 76 inches tall. Frames are available in white or black aluminium, combined with translucent or blackout fabrics. GE Lighting says the shades are assembled in the United States using aluminium components and performance fabrics.
