SmartSetup Releases a Matter over Thread Mortice Lock

As originally reported by Chris Close at MatterAlpha, SmartSetup has added a new Matter over Thread smart door lock to its product line, expanding options for homeowners looking to upgrade front-door security while integrating with modern smart home ecosystems.

The lock leverages the Matter standard over a Thread network, delivering cross-platform compatibility and local control without a proprietary hub, so as long as you have a Thread Border Router and Matter Controller in your smart home, this will work out of the box.

The SmartSetup smart lock is designed as a full-size handle-style lock that fits standard residential doors (45 ~ 90mm thickness) and can be installed on both left and right swing doors. Construction uses a zinc alloy chassis suitable for external use, with an IP65 weather rating for light exposure conditions.

Access options :

  • Bluetooth and Matter (over Thread) connectivity for app-based control, local automations, and smart home integration
  • Biometric fingerprint reader
  • passcode via a keypad
  • physical keys
  • NFC cards/fobs (provided)
  • Backup USB port – for emergency power and a physical key override to avoid lockouts

The lock supports up to 8000 openings using a removable and rechargeable 7.4V, 4200mAh / 31Wh lithium battery, with a typical battery life of roughly 3–6 months under normal use. It also comes with a one-year warranty.

By implementing Matter over Thread, SmartSetup’s lock aims to join a growing class of smart home locks that communicate locally and interoperably with Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Home Assistant is not mentioned.

Matter-enabled locks are becoming more common across major smart home vendors. Products like the Aqara Smart Lock U400 we recently reviewed, demonstrates the appeal of Matter over Thread for wide platform support, although the U400 does currently occupy a rare niche in the smart lock market due to it being the first and so far only Matter over Thread smart lock that also utilises Ultra Wideband support (UWB).

For Apple Home users, Matter support means the lock can be added directly to the Apple Home app and controlled alongside other smart devices without relying on proprietary bridges or the cloud, although remote access to these devices does require a cloud connection to your Apple Home Hub (Apple TV, HomePod etc).

SmartSetup’s Matter-over-Thread smart door lock handles represent a strong mid-range entry into the increasingly competitive smart lock segment. With multi-modal access methods, robust construction, and open smart home integration via Matter, the product targets homeowners who want both security and seamless smart home compatibility built on an open standard.
