Ikea’s New Matter over Thread Outdoor Plug Launches in the EU
IKEA’s TOFSMYGGA outdoor smart plug has begun rolling out in Europe as a Matter-compatible outdoor on/off plug designed to extend smart control and energy tracking to exterior devices and lighting. It joins the brand’s broader line of Matter devices that aim to simplify connected home setups across platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and more.
The TOFSMYGGA plug is described as weather-resistant with an IP44 rating when its protective lid is closed, making it suitable for garden lights, patio lanterns and other outdoor equipment.
- Matter compatibility: It uses Matter over Thread, meaning it adds directly to a Matter-enabled network once paired with a suitable Thread border router such as IKEA’s own DIRIGERA hub or compatible hubs from other brands.
- Remote and automation control: Once added to a Matter ecosystem, the plug can be switched on and off remotely through the IKEA Home smart app, through motion sensors or remote controls, and be included in routines or schedules.
- Energy monitoring: TOFSMYGGA tracks power usage of the connected device, helping users understand and adjust daily routines around energy consumption.
- Multiple triggers: Up to 10 plugs can be controlled by a single IKEA remote control or motion sensor when configured through the IKEA Home smart app.
This reflects IKEA’s continued strategy of making basic smart functions accessible and interoperable across ecosystems by adopting Matter as a common layer. Matter support is significant for Apple Home because it allows accessories like the TOFSMYGGA plug to be added to the Home app without a proprietary bridge or relying on any cloud connection. With a local Matter controller such as a HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini or Apple TV4K (2nd gen or 3rd gen, 128gb) acting as a Thread border router and Matter controller, the plug can appear directly in Apple Home for use in automations and scenes alongside native HomeKit and Matter devices.
In practice this means you can:
- Switch outdoor lights on and off from the Home app or via Siri
- Create automations such as sunset-triggered lighting
- See device power status and consumption (where supported by Matter)
Because Matter defines a common control model, power consumption metrics and on/off states can appear consistently across platforms.
The TOFSMYGGA outdoor plug fills a practical gap for Matter devices in many smart home setups. Weather-proof smart plugs have generally required brand-specific hubs or relied on Wi-Fi, but by using Matter over Thread, IKEA’s plug benefits from local networks and mesh stability while broadening choice for users who want both outdoor control and integration with existing Matter devices. Being weather-ready and affordable also reflects the ethos behind IKEA’s smart range as it transitions to Matter as a foundation for compatibility across brands and platforms.
At launch it is listed at SEK 149 in Sweden and has begun appearing in stock lists across Europe, though availability may vary by region. Although early adopters may already have Matter devices indoors, TOFSMYGGA shows how Matter’s reach is extending to parts of the home where smart control previously involved bespoke solutions or multiple network types.

You say voice commands can be done via Siri. You also say “It joins the brand’s broader line of Matter devices that aim to simplify connected home setups across platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and more.”
Can you please be specific a out what devices are compatible with which controllers. There are plenty of people who don’t use Apple. So many reviews seem to ignore this and are of little use.
Can you please be more specific about whether these IKEA devices work with systems other than Apple. You mention Google and Alexa, but explicitly say items can be controlled by Siri and Apple Home.
Reviews which focus on Apple are of little use to all of us who don’t use it. Even my Apple loving Bro uses Alexa rather than Siri.
Matter devices work with all the major platforms, so this device will work with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings as long as you have a Matter Controller for the ecosystem you use and it all has a Thread Border Router inside. I mention Siri because this is an Apple HomeKit focused website.
This is an Apple HomeKit focused website, so you won’t find much in the way of other platforms mentioned here other than whether the products or services in question work with Matter.
