Govee has introduced its Outdoor Chromatic String Lights, a new range of decorative outdoor lighting designed to offer more flexible colour control and visual effects than conventional bulb string lights, with Matter over WiFi.
The company claims these are the first outdoor string lights to use what it calls a Single-Light Rainbow System. This function, whilst new to Govee, was similarly created years earlier by LiFX with their short-lived LiFX Candle. Rather than assigning one static colour per bulb, the design allows multiple colours and gradient effects to be produced within each individual light. This is achieved through the use of high-density LED arrays and independent integrated circuit control, allowing more complex transitions and animated lighting patterns.
Each bulb incorporates 55 RGB LEDs, enabling multi-colour output and smoother dynamic changes from a single light source. A dual-layer shell construction is intended to improve light diffusion and depth, while high-transmittance materials aim to maintain colour clarity and brightness.
The lights are designed for permanent outdoor installation, with an IP67 rating for resistance to rain and moisture. Govee states that the construction is intended to support long-term use in typical outdoor conditions, with an expected operational lifespan of more than ten years.
Users are able to customise lighting effects on a per-bulb basis through the Govee Home app, including layered cycling effects to create more varied visual patterns across the string. In addition to colour output, each bulb can also produce white light with a rated brightness of up to 240 lumens, allowing the lights to be used for functional illumination as well as decorative scenes.
Smart control is available via the Govee Home app, with voice assistant support for Siri, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. The lights also support Matter, allowing integration with compatible smart home platforms.
The Govee Outdoor Chromatic String Lights are available in two lengths, with a 10m/32.8ft version priced at US$169.99 and a 20m/65.6ft version priced at US$299.99. available via Amazon.
