Aqara’s Matter-enabled Thermostat Hub W200 Launches in N. America

Aqara has announced the launch of its Thermostat Hub W200 in North America, marking the company’s first thermostat for the region and adding another Matter-enabled device to its growing ecosystem.

The W200 combines thermostat functionality with hub capabilities, positioning it as both a climate controller and a central node for smart home automation. Of particular note is its support for both Thread and Zigbee, alongside Matter compatibility, which allows it to integrate with Matter enabled platforms including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings.

THREAD AND MATTER AT THE CORE

The inclusion of Thread, whilst not a first for Aqara, is significant, as it allows the W200 to operate as part of a low-power mesh network, improving reliability and responsiveness for compatible devices. Combined with its Matter support, the device can act as a Matter bridge between Aqara’s Zigbee ecosystem and broader Matter-based setups.

Aqara states that the W200 can manage over 50 device types, including third-party Matter devices, effectively making it a multi-protocol hub for mixed environments. This aligns with the wider industry shift towards Matter as a unifying standard, with Thread increasingly used as the preferred transport layer for low-latency, local communication.

APPLE HOME FEATURES AND AUTOMATION

The W200 also integrates with Apple’s newer Home features, including Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance, provided the home is running the latest OS versions and has a compatible home hub such as an Apple TV or HomePod/mini. These features allow the thermostat to adjust heating and cooling based on occupancy patterns and grid conditions, although functionality is currently limited to supported regions and configurations. In addition, the thermostat can respond to occupancy using its built-in mmWave presence sensor, enabling automations based on real-time detection rather than simple motion triggers.

BEYOND A STANDARD THERMOSTAT

The W200 includes a 4” touchscreen that can display information from other Aqara devices, such as video doorbells and smart locks, effectively turning it into a wall-mounted control panel. It also supports remote sensors via Zigbee, allowing temperature and occupancy data to be gathered from different rooms, which can then be used to refine HVAC control.

COMPATIBILITY AND INSTALLATION

Designed for North American HVAC systems, the W200 supports a wide range of setups, including furnaces, heat pumps, boilers, and PTAC units. It requires a C-wire for installation, with an optional adapter sold separately for US$29.99. Connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi.

AVAILABILITY

The Aqara Thermostat Hub W200 is available now in Amazon.com, priced at US$159.99, with wider retail availability through major outlets. A version for the Apple Store is expected later in 2026.

  • Specifically for the European market, it is important that a thermostat supports OpenTherm, a protocol to give more granular instruction to the heating unit besides a simple on/off. Do you know of Aqara’s plans in this regard?

    • I assume Aqara will make a version for Europe, and if so, it’s likely they’ll make sure it supports OpenTherm, but I’ve not heard any rumours as to any such product yet.
