Aqara’s Multi-State Sensor P100 Now Available

Aqara has released its Multi-State Sensor P100, a compact sensor designed to expand beyond traditional contact sensors by combining multiple detection capabilities within a single device. The new sensor is Matter-enabled and supports both Thread and Zigbee.

MATTER OVER THREAD

At its core, the P100 is built around Matter, allowing it to integrate with platforms including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and others. Thread support enables direct, low-power communication within a mesh network, reducing reliance on proprietary hubs for basic functionality and improving responsiveness for automations.

As with other Matter devices in this category, functionality can vary depending on the platform. In some cases, advanced sensor data is simplified when exposed via Matter, typically presenting as a binary state rather than detailed telemetry, reflecting current limitations of the Matter specification.

MULTI-STATE SENSING APPROACH

Unlike traditional door and window sensors that rely on a separate magnetic contact, the P100 uses a single-unit design with a combination of accelerometer, gyroscope, and geomagnetic sensors. This allows it to detect a wider range of physical states, including movement, tilt, vibration, and position changes.

The result is a more flexible sensor that can be used not only for door and window monitoring, but also for tracking object movement, detecting tampering, or triggering automations based on changes in orientation. Aqara positions this as a shift away from simple open/close detection towards more context-aware sensing.

THREAD VS ZIGBEE

The P100 supports both Thread and Zigbee, offering different behaviours depending on how it is connected.

  • Thread (Matter-native): Enables direct integration into Matter ecosystems, including Apple Home, without requiring an Aqara hub for basic operation.
  • Zigbee (via Aqara hub): Unlocks additional features and more granular data within the Aqara ecosystem, which can then be bridged via Matter if required.

This dual-protocol approach is consistent with Aqara’s wider strategy, where Zigbee is still used for advanced functionality, while Thread and Matter provide broader compatibility.

AUTOMATION AND USE CASES

The sensor can be deployed in a range of scenarios, including:

  • Door and window monitoring without alignment constraints
  • Detection of movement or tampering of objects
  • Triggering automations based on tilt or vibration
  • Supplementary presence or activity detection

Because the device does not rely on a magnet, it can be installed in locations where traditional contact sensors are impractical.

The P100 reflects a broader shift in Aqara’s sensor lineup towards “multi-state” devices that combine several sensing functions into a single unit, with the FP300 being another good example. For Apple Home users in particular, its Thread and Matter support make it usable as a native accessory, although some advanced capabilities remain tied to Aqara’s own ecosystem.

You can purchase the P100 directly from Aqara’s own online store today for US$29.99, with Amazon availability coming on May 12th.

Looking forward to a proper review on this one…interested in what is exposed in Apple Home.
