SmartSetup launches Matter over Thread Smart Wall Dimmer
SmartSetup has announced its new Smart Wall Dimmer, a Matter-enabled in-wall dimmer switch that uses Thread rather than Wi-Fi, bringing faster, more resilient connectivity to Apple Home and other Matter-compatible smart home platforms.
Compatible with Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, and other Matter ecosystems through a compatible Matter controller, the dimmer takes advantage of Matter over Thread, a combination that continues to gain traction for smart home devices thanks to its low-power operation, local communication, and self-healing mesh networking.
MATTER OVER THREAD
For Apple Home users, Matter over Thread offers several advantages over Matter over Wi-Fi. Thread devices form their own self-healing mesh network, automatically rerouting communications if an individual device becomes unavailable. This not only improves reliability but can also help extend coverage as additional Thread devices are added throughout the home. Because communication remains local, commands and automations continue to operate without cloud services, provided a compatible Thread Border Router is present.
FLEXIBLE INSTALLATION
One of the more attractive aspects of the Smart Wall Dimmer is its installation flexibility. It can be wired using either a traditional three-wire configuration with a neutral connection or a two-wire installation without a neutral, making it suitable for many older homes where neutral wiring may not be available at the switch box.
The dimmer also incorporates automatic light source detection, allowing it to optimise operation for a range of compatible lighting technologies while offering adjustable minimum dimming levels and configurable startup brightness.
ENERGY MONITORING
Beyond lighting control, the Smart Wall Dimmer includes built-in energy monitoring, allowing users to view real-time power consumption from within their preferred Matter platform where supported. The device also includes a soft-start function, reducing electrical stress when lights are switched on, while its flame-retardant housing is designed for general residential installations.
LIGHTING COMPATIBILITY
The Smart Wall Dimmer supports a broad range of dimmable lighting technologies, including:
- Conventional incandescent bulbs
- High-voltage halogen lighting
- ELV halogen lamps with electronic transformers
- MLV halogen lamps with ferromagnetic transformers
- Dimmable LED bulbs
- Dimmable compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps
Support is also available for low-power dimmable loads from 3VA when used in conjunction with the optional SmartSetup Bypass module.

Have not heard of SmartSetup, but their wall switches look like an improvement on Eve’s.
They seem to be a small operation from Australia, but they’ve released a few products over the last year that I’ve reported on. More to come as well.
