Thirdreality launches Matter Smart Timer Light TL2
Thirdreality has announced the Smart Timer Light TL2, a plug-in smart home device that combines a digital clock, countdown timer, RGB night light, ambient light sensor, and 60GHz mmWave presence sensor into a single compact product.
The TL2 supports Matter over Wi-Fi, allowing it to integrate with Apple Home, Google Home, and other Matter-compatible platforms via a compatible Matter controller. For Apple Home users, this means the device can participate in Home automations alongside other Matter and HomeKit accessories without requiring a proprietary ecosystem.
While Matter support is always welcome, it’s perhaps a little disappointing that the TL2 relies on 2.4GHz Wi-Fi rather than Matter over Thread (or even 5GHz WiFi for that matter). Thread has become increasingly common for sensors and low-power smart home devices thanks to its mesh networking capabilities, lower power requirements, and reduced reliance on congested Wi-Fi networks. That said, as a permanently powered plug-in device, the choice of Wi-Fi is less of a drawback than it would be for a battery-powered sensor.
MAIN FEATURES
One of the headline features is the integrated 60GHz mmWave presence sensor. Unlike conventional PIR motion sensors, mmWave technology is capable of detecting both movement and static occupancy, allowing it to recognise someone sitting at a desk, reading, or resting without requiring continual movement.
This enables automations such as turning lights on when someone enters a room and switching them off once the room has genuinely been vacated. Detection sensitivity can also be adjusted across six levels to better suit different room sizes and layouts.
The TL2 also incorporates a digital clock with a built-in G-sensor that automatically rotates the display to the correct orientation, allowing the unit to be mounted upside down or sideways while remaining easy to read. The display offers four brightness settings – Off, Low, Medium, and High – to suit different environments.
Alongside the clock is a countdown timer with preset durations of 5, 10, 15, and 60 minutes, as well as custom timers of up to 12 hours. Lighting is provided by an integrated RGB LED with adjustable white colour temperatures ranging from a warm 2700K through to a cool 6500K, alongside dimmable brightness control and full-colour ambient lighting.
ALL-IN-ONE DESIGN
Rather than requiring separate accessories for presence sensing, ambient lighting, and timing functions, THIRDREALITY has opted to combine everything into a single plug-in unit designed for locations such as bedrooms, kitchens, hallways, desks, and home offices. The inclusion of an ambient light sensor also allows automations to take lighting conditions into account, helping prevent lights from activating unnecessarily during daylight hours.

I am not sure I can see the use case for a timer and presence sensor combined!?
For the countdown/timer feature Maybe useful for a nightlight at the side of the bed. Once the countdown ends, it turns off the light and other lights via an automation. Useful if you fall asleep and forget to turn the lights off, or if tou want a flexible countdown remind you to go to sleep. As for the presence sensor, if it was used in a corridor, it could also be useful when taking trips to the bathroom perhaps. Bear in mind there’s no suggestion that all features will be used by all users.
