Homey Updates to Matter 1.5 – Supports More Smart Devices

Athom has announced that its Homey platform has achieved Matter 1.5 certification, bringing support for a wider range of Matter device types whilst continuing to bridge existing non-Matter devices into compatible smart home ecosystems.

The certification applies to Homey’s Matter software component, which is available on the Homey Pro (2023–2026), Homey Pro mini, and Homey Self-Hosted Server. Whilst many Matter controllers currently support the earlier Matter 1.3 specification, Matter 1.5 adds compatibility for several additional categories of smart home products, including EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels, and major household appliances.

One of Homey’s long-standing strengths is its ability to bring together devices that use a wide variety of wireless protocols. In addition to acting as a Matter controller, Homey can expose compatible Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, infrared, RF433MHz, WiFi, and cloud-connected devices to other Matter ecosystems using its Matter Bridge app.

This means devices already paired with Homey can appear as Matter accessories in platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant, even if they don’t natively support Matter themselves. Homey continues to communicate with the original device, whilst the receiving platform gains access to the features supported by Matter. The Matter Bridge currently supports a variety of device types, including lights, smart plugs, thermostats, locks, window coverings, and sensors, although supported features can vary depending on the platform.

The company says this approach is intended to help users continue using existing smart home products that are unlikely to receive native Matter support, rather than forcing upgrades simply to gain compatibility with newer ecosystems.

Matter 1.5 support is available immediately on the supported Homey platforms. Both the Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini include a built-in Thread Border Router, allowing them to connect directly to Matter over Thread devices. Users running Homey Self-Hosted Server can also add Matter over Thread devices, provided they already have a compatible Thread Border Router on their local network, with onboarding handled via the Homey mobile app.

According to Athom, the Matter 1.5 certification was issued by the Connectivity Standards Alliance on 29 June 2026 for firmware version 13.3.0, with Homey remaining backwards compatible with supported devices based on earlier Matter versions.

For Apple Home users, the news is less about adding new Matter device categories – which Apple has yet to fully support itself – and more about ensuring Homey is ready as the Matter standard continues to evolve. The platform’s Matter Bridge also remains one of its most useful features, allowing older Zigbee, Z-Wave, and other devices to continue working within Apple Home without requiring manufacturers to update them with native Matter support.
