Govee Strip Light 2 Adds Matter and Improved White Lighting
Govee has introduced the Strip Light 2, a successor to its standard RGBIC LED Strip Light, bringing several notable upgrades including Matter support, Wi-Fi connectivity, improved white light reproduction, and a new protective coating.
The Strip Light 2 sits below the company’s existing and more expensive Strip Light 2 Pro, offering many of Govee’s latest lighting features in a more affordable model. For Apple Home users in particular, the most significant change over its predecessor is the addition of Matter, allowing the strip to be added directly to Apple Home and used alongside other compatible smart home devices.
MATTER AND WI-FI
Where the previous RGBIC LED Strip Light relied on Bluetooth, the Strip Light 2 adds Wi-Fi connectivity, significantly expanding its smart home capabilities. More importantly for Apple users, the new model also supports Matter.
This allows the Strip Light 2 to work with Apple Home, as well as other Matter-compatible ecosystems. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are also supported, while Govee’s own app provides access to the strip’s more advanced lighting features.
As is typically the case with Matter-compatible lighting products, Apple Home provides access to the core controls needed for everyday use and automations, while Govee Home handles proprietary features such as animated effects, preset scenes, and more detailed configuration.
IMPROVED RGBWWIC LIGHTING
Govee has also upgraded the LEDs themselves, with the Strip Light 2 using the company’s LuminBlend+ colour technology and RGBWWIC 5-in-1 LEDs. The strip can produce up to 16 million colours, with segmented control allowing different sections of the strip to display different colours simultaneously. This also enables smoother transitions and more elaborate animated lighting effects.
The inclusion of dedicated white LEDs is particularly significant, with Govee claiming improved white light reproduction compared with the previous model. Users can adjust the strip from warmer white tones suitable for ambient lighting through to cooler whites for more practical illumination. This makes the Strip Light 2 potentially more useful as an everyday light source rather than being limited primarily to decorative RGB lighting.
CUT TO FIT
The Strip Light 2 can also be cut to fit, allowing the strip to be shortened for installations where its original length isn’t required. Once cut, the strip can be calibrated within the Govee Home app to account for its new length.
This provides considerably more flexibility for installations around furniture, shelving, desks, entertainment units, and other locations where leaving excess strip lighting hidden away isn’t ideal.
Govee has also added a protective coating to the Strip Light 2, another improvement over its predecessor.
MORE THAN 100 LIGHTING SCENES
Within the Govee Home app, users have access to more than 100 preset lighting scenes, covering entertainment, gaming, holidays, and general ambient lighting. The Strip Light 2 also supports Govee’s AI Lighting Bot, which can generate custom lighting effects using AI. This sits alongside the company’s existing DIY lighting options, giving users several ways to create effects beyond those included with the preset scenes. These more advanced features remain within Govee’s own app, while Matter provides integration with third-party smart home platforms.
A MORE SMART HOME-FRIENDLY SUCCESSOR
The Strip Light 2 isn’t simply a renamed version of Govee’s existing RGBIC strip. The move to RGBWWIC LEDs, improved white reproduction, a protective coating, Wi-Fi, and especially Matter support represents a useful collection of upgrades over its predecessor.
Matter is arguably the most important of these for Apple Home users, as it removes one of the major limitations of the previous model by providing native integration with Apple’s smart home ecosystem.
The Strip Light 2 also provides a less expensive alternative to the existing Strip Light 2 Pro for those who don’t require the additional features of Govee’s higher-end model, while still offering the company’s latest lighting technology and considerably broader smart home compatibility.
