Philips Hue Screen Sync Camera and Nanoleaf Integration Revealed

As reported by smartlights.de, just over a month after the first glimpse of Philips Hue‘s upcoming Play Screen Sync camera, considerably more information has now emerged about how the new system will work. While the earlier leak revealed little beyond the product’s name and a couple of images, the latest details provide a much clearer picture of what Hue has planned.



The concept itself isn’t new. Similar camera-based TV lighting systems are already available from several smart lighting brands, but this will be a significant departure for Philips Hue. The Play Screen Sync camera sits centrally on top of a television and watches the content displayed on screen. It analyses the colours in real time, allowing compatible Hue lights assigned to an Entertainment area to reproduce those colours around the room.

More importantly, using a camera removes one of the major limitations associated with HDMI-based synchronisation. Since Screen Sync is looking directly at the television rather than intercepting an HDMI signal, it doesn’t matter where the content originates. External devices such as an Apple TV can be synchronised, but so can a television’s built-in Netflix, YouTube, or other streaming apps, as well as conventional broadcast TV.

For Apple Home users, this could make the system a more flexible addition to an existing Hue setup. Philips Hue already offers Apple Home integration through the Hue Bridge, with newer Hue Bridge models also capable of exposing compatible Hue devices to Matter ecosystems. Screen Sync itself, however, is essentially another method of controlling Hue’s Entertainment lighting rather than a new Matter accessory.



FISHEYE CAMERA COVERS THE ENTIRE DISPLAY

The hardware appears relatively straightforward. Philips Hue has equipped the Screen Sync camera with a fisheye lens capable of seeing the television from edge to edge. According to the leaked information, the system can also compensate for changes in ambient lighting. This should help maintain colour accuracy when sunlight enters the room during the day or when other lights are switched on nearby.

Details of the calibration process haven’t yet been revealed, although existing camera-based systems give us a reasonable idea of what to expect. Typically, the user identifies the boundaries of the television within the manufacturer’s app during setup, allowing the software to distinguish the actual display from the surrounding room.

The camera assembly is reportedly around 9.5cm tall, with the angled arm measuring approximately 17.5cm. Depending on the thickness of the television, this is expected to position the camera roughly 10-13cm in front of the screen. The camera head itself is considerably smaller, at just 3.8cm.

Power is supplied via USB-C, with a power adaptor included. Philips Hue also appears to include two cable clips, allowing the power cable to be routed more neatly behind the television.



A CHEAPER ROUTE TO HUE TV SYNC

Perhaps the most interesting detail is the expected price. The recently leaked Hue Play Sync Box Lite is anticipated to start at €129.99, while the Screen Sync camera could come in even lower at approximately €109.99, although a final retail price has yet to be confirmed.

That would give Philips Hue several distinctly different routes into TV lighting synchronisation. At the inexpensive end is the Hue Sync TV app, available for compatible televisions on a subscription basis. The Screen Sync camera would provide a TV-independent alternative without requiring HDMI, followed by the Sync Box Lite and, at the top of the range, the €349.99 Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 8K.

From a smart home perspective, the Screen Sync camera could arguably be the most versatile option of the bunch. HDMI sync boxes are inherently dependent on content passing through their HDMI inputs. A camera doesn’t care whether the picture is coming from an Apple TV, games console, built-in app, terrestrial tuner, or another source. It also avoids potential HDMI compatibility issues involving resolutions, refresh rates, HDR formats, and HDMI-CEC.

There are compromises, of course. Unlike an HDMI box that can be hidden away with the rest of your AV equipment, the camera remains visibly perched above the television. An HDMI-based solution should also, at least theoretically, have access to more precise colour information because it is analysing the source signal directly rather than interpreting an image captured from the display.

PHILIPS HUE AND NANOLEAF SHAPES COME TOGETHER

The Screen Sync camera isn’t the only interesting addition apparently heading to the Hue ecosystem. Another leaked accessory could be particularly significant for anyone who already has lighting products from both Philips Hue and Nanoleaf.

An earlier appearance of a “Hexagon” icon within the Hue app initially suggested Philips Hue might be preparing its own modular wall panels. It now appears there’s a rather more interesting explanation.

A new Philips Hue Wall Light Module is designed to connect directly to Nanoleaf Shapes, bringing the panels into the Hue ecosystem. Compatibility reportedly includes Nanoleaf Shapes Hexagons, Triangles, and Mini Triangles.

Despite its name, this shouldn’t be confused with the existing Hue Wall Switch Module. Rather than being installed behind a conventional wall switch, the new accessory connects directly to an available connector on a Nanoleaf Shapes installation. At approximately 7.87cm long, its appearance is reportedly not too dissimilar to Nanoleaf’s own Shapes controller.

The implications are potentially quite interesting. Up to 100 Nanoleaf Shapes panels can reportedly be brought into Hue, after which the panels appear within the Hue app as lighting devices. This would allow them to participate in Hue scenes, schedules, and automations alongside Philips Hue lighting.

Exactly how much of Nanoleaf’s native functionality will survive the transition remains unclear. Nanoleaf Shapes are capable of elaborate multicolour animations and highly customisable scenes, whereas the leaked Hue material appears to show the panels working primarily with Hue’s existing scenes and effects. Images reportedly show five separate colour-selection points that can be combined with Hue scenes and effects, suggesting some degree of multicolour control.

Even if the integration is more limited than Nanoleaf’s own app, being able to treat Shapes as part of a larger Hue Entertainment setup could potentially be more valuable – particularly in combination with products such as the new Screen Sync camera.



MATTER, BUT NO THREAD

There’s another aspect of the Nanoleaf integration that will be of particular interest to HomeKit News readers. The new Hue module reportedly uses Zigbee and Bluetooth, rather than Thread.

Matter support is nevertheless listed, although this appears to work in the same manner as other Hue accessories – through the Hue Bridge. In other words, the module isn’t a Matter-over-Thread accessory connecting directly to Apple Home. Instead, the Hue Bridge acts as the intermediary and can expose supported devices to Matter ecosystems.

That’s an interesting arrangement given Nanoleaf’s long association with Thread and Matter. In this instance, however, Philips Hue appears to be keeping the product firmly within its established Zigbee-based architecture.

For Apple Home users, the practical benefit could be that Nanoleaf Shapes integrated through the module may ultimately become accessible alongside Hue products through Matter, although we’ll need to see exactly how Philips Hue handles third-party devices connected in this way before drawing firm conclusions about what functionality will be exposed outside the Hue app.

A €39.99 BRIDGE BETWEEN TWO LIGHTING ECOSYSTEMS

The Wall Light Module is expected to cost €39.99 in Europe, with availability reportedly beginning on September 3rd.

What’s less clear is the nature of the relationship between Philips Hue and Nanoleaf behind the product. The leaked documentation apparently depicts Nanoleaf Shapes specifically, and creating a hardware interface capable of controlling them would presumably require a degree of technical cooperation. Whether this represents a formal partnership between the two companies remains to be seen.

Regardless, it’s an unusual and potentially welcome development. Smart lighting ecosystems have traditionally encouraged users to remain within a particular manufacturer’s product range. An official accessory designed specifically to bring a competitor’s lighting hardware into Hue would represent a noticeably different approach.

Taken together with the Play Screen Sync camera, Philips Hue appears to be broadening its ecosystem in two directions – making its Entertainment lighting system less dependent on specific TVs and HDMI sources, while simultaneously opening the door to lighting hardware that wasn’t made by Hue in the first place.

Both products are expected to be officially unveiled on September 3rd, when we should learn more about pricing, availability, compatibility, and exactly how deeply Nanoleaf Shapes will integrate with Hue.
