Homey Adds Firmware Updates Capabilities for Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave Devices
Athom has introduced over-the-air firmware updates for Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices directly through Homey, removing the need to use separate manufacturer apps or hubs to keep compatible devices up to date.
Users can initiate firmware updates through either the Homey Mobile App or Homey Web App, with Homey handling the download and installation process, tracking progress, and notifying users once the update is complete.
Firmware updates are regularly released by manufacturers to address bugs, improve stability, and introduce new features. However, updating individual smart home devices can often require the manufacturer’s own app or hub. Homey’s new functionality brings this process into a single interface for supported Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave devices.
For Zigbee and Z-Wave products, firmware updates are provided through each manufacturer’s integration available from the Homey App Store. A number of manufacturers already support the feature, including IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, Niko, Inovelli, Zooz, frient, ThirdReality, EcoDim, HeatIt, Namron, amina, CTM Lyng, and Nous, with additional brands expected to follow.
The process is slightly different for Matter devices. Manufacturers do not need to make changes to their existing Homey integration, as Homey can retrieve available firmware updates through the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s Distributed Compliance Ledger. this should in theory also cover Thread devices, as long as they’re Matter over Thread.
“Device firmware rarely gets updated because the process is cumbersome,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO of Athom. “By handling device updates inside Homey, we make it practical for both users and developers. That makes the whole smart home more dependable.”
The new firmware update functionality is available for Homey Cloud, Homey Pro models from 2023-2026, Homey Pro mini, and Homey Self-Hosted Server.
Homey Pro and Homey Self-Hosted Server require version 13.2.0 or later, while users updating devices through the mobile app will need Homey Mobile App version 9.10.0 or later. Firmware updates can also be started through the Homey Web App.
