SwitchBot’s Matter Air Purifiers Now Hub-Free

It wasn’t that long ago that Switchbot released a pair of air purifiers with Matter compatibility, although the options available were very limited. Now the company has announced an update for all users to download that not only adds a more full set of features when added to a Matter platform (previously only on/off control), but they’ve done away with the requirement for a Matter Bridge.

Prior to this new update, in order for these air purifiers to be exposed to Matter, they had to be ‘associated’ with one of the company’s Matter bridges – th Hub Mini with Matter or the Switchbot Hub 2. This is all despite the fact that the purifiers don’t require a hub to function, as they connect to your network using WiFi. This is also the case with their robot vacs. Now this update allows users to connect the purifiers to their Matter platform directly, without the need for any intermediate hub.

This is, of course, how it should be for WiFi devices, so it’s a welcome move by Switchbot and one that could possibly follow with their future Matter over WiFi devices.

The two models available are the Air Purifier and the Air Purifier Table. These purifiers aim to improve indoor air quality while offering practical and stylish looking home devices that blend in. Both models feature advanced filtration, smart connectivity, multifunctional design, and – they claim – are especially suitable for households with pets.

The Air Purifier has a Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) of 236 CFM (400 m³/h), making it designed specifically (but not exclusively) for larger spaces. Its filtration system – comprising pre-filters, activated carbon, and HEPA filters – removes 99.97% of airborne particles, (actually standard for most air purifiers these days), including allergens, pet dander, and bacteria. Designed with pet owners in mind, it eliminates 93.45% of pet hair, neutralises 98.18% of odours within 30 minutes, and filters 99.01% of cat allergens and 99.99% of bacteria.

The Air Purifier Table combines air purification with a compact, multi-functional surface, serving as a coffee or bedside table. It features Qi-standard wireless charging for Android and iPhone devices, customisable RGB lighting with ten colour options, and a waterproof surface. Note that iPhone users will not get the full advertised charging rate found with Apple’s own Qi charging devices.

Both devices integrate with the SwitchBot Ecosystem and now your own Matter platform directly, allowing users to monitor air quality, adjust settings, and schedule operations. The Air Purifier can clean a 215 sq. ft. space in 7.2 minutes and cover up to 1,800 sq. ft. per hour. Washable pre-filters help extend the filter lifespan, reducing maintenance costs and waste.

Both models feature an ambient light atop the purifier that changes colour depending on how clean the air in the room is.
