Third Reality Teases New Matter Over Thread Smart Button

Third Reality aren’t a company whose products I’ve had any real interaction with, but they’re clearly attempting to move towards both Matter and Thread, especially with their forthcoming smart button.

The company teased this new product via Twitter/X, mentioning both Matter and Thread, along with a simple ‘coming soon’ message. Third Reality already sell a Zigbee-based smart button, and although the basic shape is similar, this new model places the button more towards the middle. The Zigbee model has the button at the top, and is more square compared to this new model, which opts for a more pill-like rectangular shape.

Given the shape, it’s likely to work on AAA batteries, like the current model, but of course won’t require the company’s proprietary Zigbee hub. Instead, due to both Matter and Thread, it’ll work with any smart platform with a Matter Controller and a Thread Border Router.

Like all smart buttons, you’re going to get single, double, and long press actions, so nothing out of the ordinary in that respect, but it’s at least good to be seeing another Matter over Thread smart button, for which there’s a severe lack of options right now. Currently, the only easily available Matter over Thread button is by Arre (formerly Tuo). You can read our review HERE.

When this will be released and how much it will cost is up in the air right now, but taking into account the current price of US$16.99 for the Zigbee model, I’d estimate the new Matter over Thread model will add a few dollars, possibly bringing the price to around US$20.
