Philips’ New Smart Locks Also Includes a Matter Option

In what some may consider a bit of a surprise, Philips (not Philips Hue) has launched a collection of smart locks. Of these, one model is designed to work with Matter over Thread.

The collection of locks includes the 1000, 3000, 4o00, and 5000 Series along with a separate video doorbell, all reportedly available later in the year.

Of these, only the 4000 series is going to be of interest to HomeKit and Matter users, although the 5000 series does feature palm recognition technology!

The 4000 Series smart lock doesn’t really offer anything we’ve not seen before, unfortunately, and to be clear, the 4000 model – without Matter support – is already available for purchase, so if you’re in the market, make sure to wait until the Matter model becomes available.

The 4000 Series deadbolt lock will feature a built-in keypad, a fingerprint sensor, standard keys, and options for opening the app via your phone, although this model doesn’t seem to feature Apple HomeKey, which to many will mean is dead on arrival. Still, as Philips’ first product powered by Matter, the 4000 Series Smart Deadbolt is aimed at reflecting the brand’s renewed focus on interoperable and future-ready smart home technology:

  • Due to Matter over Thread Compatibility, the 4000 series should offer reliable, fast, and energy-efficient connectivity with all the existing smart home platforms – Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.
  • Straightforward installation as is the case with most deadbolt locks, and easy pairing, remove the need for complicated tools or configurations.
  • Cross-platform voice control enables hands-free locking and unlocking using Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant for added convenience.
  • Customisable smart automations allows Integration with other Matter-enabled devices to support efficient smart home functionality.

Availability and pricing will be announced  for the 4000 Series Matter-Compatible Smart Deadbolt when all locks from the collection are due to be launched in the second half of 2025.
