SmartSetup Matter/Thread Switches Available in Singapore, UAE
You may have seen us mention a company called SmartSetup a while back that make reasonably priced smart switches for the North American Market, all of which utilise Matter over Thread. Now the company has launched light switches suitable for Singapore and the UAE (United Arab Emirates), via their respective Amazon stores.
The new switch uses the ’86 type’ shape and dimensions, with a plastic, touch-sensitive surface to control the lights rather than a mechanical rocker or toggle switch. As already mentioned, these utilise Matter over Thread, so they’ll work with all the major Smart Home platforms, as long as you have a Matter Controller and Thread Border Router. For Matter platforms the following devices would be suitable for both these required roles;
- Apple: Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 128 GB), HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini
- Samsung: SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station
- Amazon: Echo (4th gen)
- Google: Google TV Streamer, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro
The switches currently available only offer a single gang option, but come in single, double, or triple switch configurations, in either black or white. There are also some hidden extras for these switches that may tempt you, which includes the option to use these with or without a neutral, all in the same switch. Additionally, they can be set to wireless mode, thus allowing you to use them as smart buttons to control smart bulbs connected to the switch circuit.
The other bit of good news is that the switches can help extend your Thread Network, which helps with battery operated Thread devices that may be far from your Thread Border Router.
The new switch are designed for ’86 type’ switch boxes found in the UK, Europe and China, and although it appears the rear wire terminals are rounded, making them suitable for European back boxes, these are currently only available in Singapore and the UAE. They are CE certified, however, making them suitable for use in Europe, at least on paper. These are also designed to work with either 100~120v or 200~240v at either 50 or 60Hz.
Smartsetup’s Tamer also informed us that they plan to release 2-gang and 3-gang switch options in Q2 of 2025, with the same specs and options.
You can purchase these switches now from Amazon.sg or Amazon.ae.
