LG Appears to Backtrack on HomeKit Support for Some 2018 TVs

Last week it was widely reported that LG had reneged on its original plan to add HomeKit support for a selection of its Smart TV dating back to 2018. This update was itself seemingly in response to a plan to only add support for HomeKit, AirPlay 2, or the Apple TV app, to models from 2019. This proposed update was to happen in October of this year.

However, on August 26th, the Korean company stated via their UK Twitter account, that it would no longer be planning on the aforementioned update. This unsurprisingly became a bit of a PR nightmare for the company, with many people stating their contempt for the unexpected move.

Fast forward to September the 7th, and as spotted by Reddit user u/Neokura, LG has done yet another about-turn, now stating, via the same Twitter account;

Customers worldwide can now enjoy the Apple TV app on LG 2018OLED and Super UHD TVs, with UHD TV models to follow. LG’s 2018 TVs will add support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit later this year, and more details will be shared when these features become available

According to the aforementioned Reddit user, the models to get this update will be for the OLED B8 to Z8 Series and the LED UK/SK series. This is obviously great news for those customers that held out hope for the relevant update, only to be left adrift by the August 26th Tweet. Whether this reversal is down to customer feedback, or a genuine reevaluation of the merits of Apple functionality in their older models, we may never know, but it’s a good sign for many, although we suggest you don’t hold your breath just yet…
